MAV - How to become a Pilot

Do you remember the first time you dreamt of flying through the clouds in your aircraft?

Aviation Courses open a world of possibilities for jobs in the airline industry, ranging from the role of a cabin crew member to that of an airline pilot. Among these options, the journey to become a pilot is an exhilarating one, promising adventure, responsibility, and a fresh perspective on the world. An airline pilot career offers stability, continuous learning, exciting adventures, and competitive pay.

To become a commercial (airline) pilot, you must earn a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). Subsequently, you can pursue a multi-crew pilot license specific to a particular airline. Some airlines like Indigo and SpiceJet offer special pilot programs for aspiring pilots where they guide aspiring pilots with no previous flying experience turning them into pilots who could later join them. These programs are called Cadet Programs.

If the cadet pilot program is not for you, the other path of becoming a commercial pilot is the conventional way. This is when you learn to fly an aircraft from a flying school and get your important licenses before you apply for an airline. While the former is a fast track to your place in the cockpit, the latter is an elaborate path which comes with manually choosing what is best for you to learn as an aspiring pilot at every step.

In India, the journey to become a commercial pilot starts after school. The eligibility is to clear 12th or equivalent with Physics and Maths. The next step to becoming a commercial pilot is to clear the DGCA exams. DGCA or The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is a statutory body of the Government of India to regulate civil aviation in India. The DGCA assigns a unique number to every aspiring pilot called the Computer Number. The DGCA conducts 8 exams, four times a year. To sit for a DGCA exam you must have your unique applicant number called the Computer Number.

To embark on your journey at a flight training school it is necessary to clear the DGCA exams. Once you've mastered the art of flying and secured essential licenses, such as the Commercial Pilot License, the exciting next step is joining an airline to launch your career.

After an overview of the journey to become an airline pilot, let us answer your burning questions and guide you through the clouds of uncertainty. Let's buckle up and get started on your flight to success!

1. The Pathway to the Skies: How to Become a Pilot

Becoming a pilot isn't just a job; it's a lifelong passion that starts with a solid foundation. Here's your step-by-step guide to reaching those cockpit controls:

Education: Begin with a high school diploma or equivalent. A background in math, physics, and geography will give you a head start.

Choose the Right Route: Decide whether to pursue a commercial pilot license (CPL) or an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). CPL is a quick industry entry, while an ATPL allows advanced careers but demands more time and experience.

Flight Training: Enroll in a reputable flight school to gain hands-on experience and clock in those flight hours. This is where the magic happens as you learn to navigate, take off, and land safely.

Obtain Your License: Successfully complete mandated flight hours, written exams, and practical tests to earn your license, whether it's a PPL, CPL, or ATPL.

Experience Matters: To become a commercial airline pilot, you'll need to accumulate more flight hours, often as a flight instructor or charter pilot.
